📊 Metrics & Bidding
The numbers that decide what you pay. Benchmarks live in our TikTok Ads Cost guide.
- CPC — Cost Per Click
- What you pay each time someone clicks your ad. TikTok 2026 average: $0.50–$1.00.
- CPM — Cost Per Mille
- Cost per 1,000 impressions. TikTok averages $6–$10 — usually cheaper than Meta.
- oCPM — Optimized CPM
- TikTok's default for conversion campaigns: billed per 1,000 impressions, but delivery targets users likely to convert.
- CPV — Cost Per View
- Cost per 6-second (or 2-second focused) video view. Typically $0.01–$0.04.
- CPA — Cost Per Acquisition
- Cost per conversion (purchase, lead, install). TikTok range: $15–$50 depending on vertical.
- CPI — Cost Per Install
- App-campaign CPA variant. TikTok delivers some of the cheapest installs: $2–$8.
- ROAS — Return On Ad Spend
- Revenue ÷ ad spend. ROAS 3.0 = $3 back per $1 spent. The north-star metric for e-commerce.
- CTR — Click-Through Rate
- Clicks ÷ impressions. A healthy TikTok CTR is ~1%+; below 0.8% usually means creative fatigue.
- CVR — Conversion Rate
- Conversions ÷ clicks (or ÷ impressions, depending on report). Driven by landing page and offer quality.
- Frequency
- Average number of times one user sees your ad. Above ~4/week, expect fatigue and rising CPAs.
- Lowest Cost (bidding)
- Default strategy: TikTok spends your full budget for maximum results, no bid input needed. Best for beginners.
- Cost Cap (bidding)
- You set a target average CPA; TikTok tries to hold your average near it, trading off delivery volume.
- Bid Cap (bidding)
- Hard maximum bid per optimisation event. Maximum control, minimum delivery. For experienced buyers.
- Learning Phase
- The exploration period after launch. Exits after ~50 conversion events per ad group; expect volatile CPAs until then.
- Billing Threshold
- The accumulated spend level at which TikTok charges your payment method (thresholds rise as trust builds).

🎯 Targeting & Audiences
Who sees your ads — and how TikTok finds more of your buyers.
- Custom Audience
- Audience built from your data: customer lists, website visitors (via Pixel), app activity, or ad engagers.
- Lookalike Audience
- TikTok finds new users statistically similar to a source Custom Audience (e.g. past purchasers).
- Retargeting
- Serving ads to users who already interacted — viewed your video, visited your site, added to cart. Requires the Pixel.
- Broad Targeting
- Minimal targeting inputs; the algorithm finds converters itself. Recommended starting point in 2026.
- Interest & Behavior Targeting
- Segments based on content interaction categories (e.g. beauty, gaming, cooking) and engagement behaviours.
- Audience Exclusion
- Removing segments (e.g. existing customers) from delivery to avoid paying twice for the same person.
- Automated Targeting
- TikTok adjusts audience automatically based on campaign performance; part of Smart+ automation.
📡 Tracking & Measurement
Signal quality decides your CPA. Setup walkthrough: Pixel & Events API guide.
- TikTok Pixel
- JavaScript snippet on your site that reports page views, add-to-carts, purchases and more back to TikTok.
- Events API
- Server-side connection sending conversion events directly from your backend — resilient to ad blockers and browser limits. Running it with the Pixel lifts ROAS ~19%.
- Advanced Matching
- Hashed customer data (email, phone) attached to events to improve attribution match rates.
- Standard Events
- Predefined event types: ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, CompletePayment, etc.
- Custom Events
- Your own defined events for actions outside the standard set (e.g. "quiz_completed").
- Event Deduplication
- Matching browser + server events by event_id so conversions aren't double-counted when running Pixel + Events API together.
- Attribution Window
- How long after a click/view a conversion is credited to the ad (e.g. 7-day click, 1-day view).
- Post-Purchase Survey Attribution
- "How did you hear about us?" data used to validate platform-reported conversions — useful since iOS privacy limits.
